Elmendorf Air Force Base

Aircraft Hangars

United States Air Force
End Use:
Aircraft Weather Shelters
Project Location:
Elmendorf AFB, Alaska
Square Footage:
103,000 Square Feet

BlueScope Construction was awarded the contract in June and immediately started the design and material procurement—knowing that the weather shelters needed to be enclosed before the first snows.

Value engineering options were used to reduce the amount of explosion proof motors and operators, which lowered the project cost while still maintaining the code requirements of the USAF. BSC accomplished this by providing continuous fall protection to facilitate access to all portions of the plane and also by designing the APU unit for F-22 exhaust, which was customized to eliminate unnecessary induct fans.

The 103,000 square foot building has a metal standing seam roof system and insulated metal wall panels and includes Megadoors front and back for drive through capability as well as a fire safe wall. Green, sustainable design features were incorporated into the design and construction process.
